The oldest trail marathon in California has been recognized by the world’s leading responsible sport certification program
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Spectrum Sports Management, producer of the Run Catalina Island race series, has announced that the Catalina Island Marathon has received the Silver Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, the world’s leading responsible sport certification program.
The Council for Responsible Sport attended the 2024 Catalina Island Marathon to evaluate its sustainability efforts. Some of these efforts included partnering with sustainability-focused vendors and ensuring vendors don’t use packing peanuts or plastic, making the event a cupless race, using bungee cords over zip ties, finisher medals being made of sustainable materials and having participants sign a “leave no trace behind” pledge. After their evaluation at this year’s event, the Council awarded the Silver Certificate to the Catalina Island Marathon, which is awarded to events and organizations that have achieved 60% or more of the total best practices promoted in the standards for responsible sport.
“Gaining the Silver Certification from the Council of Responsible Sport is an exciting step forward for the Run Catalina Island race series,” said Mike Bone, President and CEO of Spectrum Sports Management, which produces the Catalina Island Marathon. “We work hard to keep Catalina Island wild while still providing participants the unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the island. This is only the start for Spectrum Sports Management in our sustainability efforts, and we hope to influence others in the industry to follow suit!”
“Congratulations to Run Catalina for their exceptional efforts in achieving the Council For Responsible Sport silver certification,” said the Council for Responsible Sport. “This accomplishment truly demonstrates their unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and environmental conservation. We are confident that their work will inspire others!”
The Catalina Island Marathon will be celebrating its 48th annual event on March 8, making it the oldest trail marathon in California. The course provides participants a one-of-a-kind experience through a historic route, starting in Two Harbors and finishing in Avalon. The spectacular vistas, wildlife and challenging climbs have been enjoyed by thousands of runners over the years.
