J&A Racing Embraces Virtual Races During COVID-19 Epidemic

April 12, 2020 – VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA –  J&A Racing, a locally-owned, small business based in Virginia Beach that hosts a series of running events, has had to adjust and adapt like so many businesses during the COVID-19 epidemic. J&A Racing opened its doors in 2001 when it purchased the local marathon now known as the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon. The decision to start a new business was an easy one for owners, Jerry and Amy Frostick.

“We wanted to share our passion for running, fitness, and fun with our community. That passion still burns inside us, and it fuels the company today,” said Jerry Frostick.

When faced with the cancelation of the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend that was scheduled for March 20-22, 2020 – a first in the 49 year history of the event – both Jerry and Amy Frostick and their team of 7 employees recognized that they still needed a place to direct their passion. It is the running community that brings life to each of the races. Even if all three of J&A Racing’s spring events are canceled or rescheduled, the running community still exists. The goal shifted from bringing the running community to race day to bring the race experience to the running community. They quickly adopted virtual races as part of their race portfolio.

On April 1, 2020, J&A Racing announced that it would be hosting a virtual 5K per month between April – August. April’s virtual 5K is a modification of the annual MSP Design Group Big Blue 5K presented by Bon Secours. Instead of running on the Old Dominion Campus, participants are encouraged to run a 5K route from home to show off their Big Blue pride. A portion of registration fees will be donated to the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation to support student-athlete scholarships. In May, the running community is invited to run the inaugural I Heart Mom 5K to support the First Responders Children’s Foundation who provides support to those first responder families who are enduring financial hardship due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“Whether you run, walk or simply get off the couch and move, we are here to do what we have always done. We want to bring the running community together while supporting a greater cause. If you miss races as much as we do, sign up for one of our virtual options to keep the spirit of racing going,” said Amy Frostick.
