NYRR Job: Director, Youth and Community Outreach

 

About the Department

New York Road Runners has been offering free youth running programs in schools and at community centers since 1999. Starting in one borough of New York City with one school and 15 kids, we’ve grown to serve all five boroughs, the tri-state area and 48 states nationwide. The department also partners with the Youth Events team at NYRR to put on 100 free races and events each year across NYC. NYRR’s youth platform, Rising New York Road Runners, is designed to build fitness skills in ways that work for kids of all ability levels in grades pre-K through 12th grade and instill the confidence and motivation to stay healthy and active for life. We provide all the tools, from instructor training and resources to equipment and free incentives as kids reach milestones.

 

About the Position:

The Director, Youth & Community Outreach is responsible for developing and driving NYRR’s year-round comprehensive youth and community outreach strategy and action plan. This role requires exceptional skills in leadership, strategic thinking, and communication to drive participation in NYRR’s nationally recognized youth and community programs and events, and to build relationships with the communities where NYRR operates events and programs. This role will work collaboratively with members of the Youth and Community Services department and org-wide departments to identify and implement innovative outreach ideas, including new partnership opportunities. The successful candidate will have the capability to pair testing of new ideas with a focus on data and analytics to drive targeted outreach activities. The Director, Youth & Community Outreach will identify event attendance opportunities and determine staffing (including at conferences, presentations, and meetings) and will attend and present at relevant meetings to promote NYRR programs and build relationships.

This position leads the Youth & Community Outreach team and directly manages team members responsible community relations and outreach for all NYRR youth and community programs and events. The Director, Youth & Community Outreach reports to the Senior Vice President, Youth and Community Services.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Collaboratively develop and drive comprehensive year-round outreach strategy and action plan, for all youth and community programs and NYRR races and events
  • Work with outreach and program team members to identify objectives, develop metrics to evaluate outcomes, and manage continuous improvement
  • Foster creative thinking, encourage idea-sharing, and monitor market landscape to generate innovative outreach tactics
  • Monitor and communicate outreach results against targets; Analyze data from outreach activities, including from Salesforce CRM, to identify trends and takeaways to inform strategy and action plan
  • Partner with the marketing team to support marketing planning and development of promotional materials
  • Ensure tracking of all outreach activities in Salesforce CRM and Microsoft Teams; manage end-to-end outreach Standard Operating Procedures and identify and implement needed changes / additions
  • Develop and deepen relationships with partner organizations and identify areas for collaboration
  • Think strategically about outreach team structure / resourcing against strategic plan
  • Manage outreach team employees, including coaching, teambuilding and performance management
  • Develop, manage, and adhere to team budget
  • Consistently represent NYRR as the world’s premier community running organization, at conferences, presentations, and meetings

Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities

  • Effectively manage employee performance through communication of expectations and standards
  • Prepare performance appraisals. Work with next level management (directors or department head as applicable) when employee performance does not meet standards
  • Provide effective feedback and coaching to employees, including potential areas of improvement
  • Create goals for the team and individual employees
  • Encourage an environment of transparency, support, development, and growth
  • Delegate and distribute tasks and responsibilities appropriately
  • Ensure employees and staff adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Make decisions based on best interest of organization
  • Track employee attendance, if applicable
  • Collaborate with Human Resources as support
  • Promote team culture that coincides with NYRR mission and core values

 

Job Requirements: 

Experience:

  • 10+ years experience in an outreach, sales, or marketing role within a for-profit or not-for-profit setting
  • Experience developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with diverse communities and a deep understanding of cultural and socioeconomic differences
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a comprehensive strategic outreach approach and collaborate with team members to drive actions against the strategy
  • Experience related to youth, community-based, and/or physical activity programming a plus
  • Experience working with NYC communities, government, or human service organizations a plus
  • Knowledge of best practices related to using a CRM system to support outreach / sales; Must be able to efficiently and effectively maintain a CRM system

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable professional experience directly related to this job; Master’s degree in marketing, public health, or related field a plus

Skills and Attributes:

  • Outstanding management skills with the ability to motivate a team; Proven experience in managing people, logistics, budgets, and internal processes
  • Analytical approach toward data & performance; Strong focus on data and analytics to drive targeted activities
  • Dynamic and innovative thinker
  • Exceptional communication skills, including ability to present in front of large groups
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to travel overnight (infrequent)
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages beyond English a plus.
