Browne, De Reuck to Defend USA 20K Titles at New Haven Against Top Fields
$34,000 USA Championship purse, World Half-Marathon team spots at stake

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - (August 28, 2003) - The 26th New Haven Savings Bank 20K - to be held Monday, September 1 - again hosts the USA Championships and like past editions, deep U.S. fields including the defending champions Dan Browne and Colleen De Reuck are expected for the annual Labor Day tradition. The stacked fields - which also include Olympians Meb Keflezighi, Brad Hauser, Rod DeHaven, Marla Runyan and Kate Fonshell and recent national road champions Sara Wells, Chris Graff, Peter DeLaCerda, David Morris, Jeanne Hennessy and Scott Larson - will compete not only for U.S. titles, but also over a $34,000 USA Championship purse ($6000 for the national champion) and spots on the U.S. team for the World Half-Marathon Championships October 4 in Portugal.

"This year's national championship could be something special. Both defending champions are back, the fields are deep and fast, and we look forward to some outstanding racing on Labor Day morning," said John Courtmanche, Board President, New Haven Savings Bank Road Race.

Monday's New Haven forecast is showers with lows in the low 60s and highs in the mid 70s.

As a USA Championship, the New Haven 20K is also part of the USA Running Circuit (USARC), a USA Track & Field road series. Many of the top contenders for the $25,000 USARC Grand Prix will be at the race including the 2002 GP champions Browne and De Reuck and top contenders (Keflezighi, Graff, Phillimon Hanneck, Chad Johnson, Wells and Runyan). The top ten U.S. finishers will earn important Circuit points.

Last year, in an exciting race, Browne edged Kyle Baker to defend his national title in 59:21 to 59:22 (#5 and #6 U.S. all-time), while De Reuck dominated the women's race with her 1:07:53 as Libbie Hickman was over a minute back in 1:09:02.

This year, Browne, 28, of Portland, Ore. goes for a rare USA 20K title three-peat, but a formidable field awaits him. The 2003 Pan Am Games 10,000 meter bronze medalalist - who is coached by American legend Alberto Salazar - also won the USA 25K Championship last May at the Fifth Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1998, the Army graduate won five 1998 USA titles (5K, 10K, 10,000m, 3000m indoor and 4K cross country).

Browne's main challengers at New Haven should be:

1) Meb Keflezighi, 28, (Mammoth Lakes, CA), 2003 USA 8K and 15K champion, 3rd Bix 7 Mile (32:41) and USA 10,000m runner-up; won five national titles in 2002 (5K, 10,000m, 7 Mile, 12K cross country and 15K); in 2001, set U.S. 10,000m record (27:13.98); 2000 Olympian at 10,000m; Team USA California

2) Brad Hauser, 26, (Mountain View, CA), 2nd 2003 San Diego Half-Marathon (1:03:31); 2000 Olympian (5000m); three-time NCAA outdoor champion at Stanford

3) Peter DeLaCerda, 31, (Alamosa, CO), 9th 2003 Bix 7 Mile (33:44) and 3rd USA Half-Marathon Championships; 2002 USA Half-Marathon champion; 2nd 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (Pittsburgh); Team USA California

4) Phillimon Hanneck, 32, (Portland, OR), 2003 USA Half-Marathon and 25K Championships runner-up; 1999 USA 10K and 20K Champion; 1992 1500m Olympian for Zimbabwe

5) Scott Larson, 32, (Boulder, CO), 10th 2003 Bix 7 Mile (34:18); 2001 USARC Grand Prix co-champion with Dan Browne and USA Marathon champion (2:15:26, New York City); 4th 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (Pittsburgh)

6) Rod DeHaven, 36, (Madison, WI), 2nd 2003 Naples Half-Marathon (1:04:47); 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials champion (Pittsburgh); 1994/98/2000 USA Half-Marathon champion; 1998/2000 USA Running Circuit GP champion

In the women's race, De Reuck, 39, a three-time Olympian for South Africa, is a co-favorite with 2000 Olympian Marla Runyan. In June, De Reuck won the USA Half-Marathon title with a championship record time of 1:10:00. The Boulder, Colo. resident has an extensive running resume with four U.S. road titles and major road victories at the Carlsbad 5000, Bix 7, Berlin Marathon, Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, Bloomsday 12K and New Haven. Runyan, 34, of Eugene, Ore. will also be tough to beat at New Haven. The three-time USA 5000m champion and former hepathlete who is legally blind also is becoming an experienced road racer as recently she has won USA road titles at 5K (2002-03) and 10K (2002) and placed fourth in her 2002 marathon debut (2:27:10) at New York.

USA Running Circuit Resumes at New Haven Savings Bank 20K
Top Contenders Expected for USA Championship

After a summer hiatus, the 2003 USA Running Circuit - a USA Track & Field road series featuring USA Championships from 5K to the marathon - resumes action at the 26th New Haven Saving Bank 20K on Labor Day, Monday, September 1. The 2003 USARC - with nine events for men and seven events for women - offers over $340,000 in championship prize money plus a $25,000 grand prix purse.

Men's Circuit leader Ryan Shay will not be at New Haven because he will be competing in the marathon at the World Championships in Paris this Saturday, but Team USA California teammate Meb Keflezighi, currently second in the USARC standings, is returning from Paris to run the national championship and a top performance will protect his #2 position. Phillimon Hanneck (#4 tied), Chris Graff (#6), Chad Johnson (#7 tied) and 2002 USARC Grand Prix champion Dan Browne (#10) can improve their placements with top performances there.

For the women, Colleen De Reuck, the 2002 USARC Grand Prix Champion, thus far, has guaranteed at least second in the USARC GP and a win or second place at New Haven guarantees her the 2003 GP title, while Sara Wells (#2) and Marla Runyan (#3 tied) will try to solidify their positions with top finishes.

At each event, the first ten U.S. runners earn Circuit points (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1). USARC points were doubled at the USA Marathon Championships. For more information on the USARC including complete standings, schedule, past champions and more, go to: http://www.usatf.org/events/2003/USARunningCircuit/

Since its inception in 1995, the USA Running Circuit and its races have provided over $3.7 million dollars to U.S. distance runners. The USARC mission is to showcase, support and promote U.S. runners. Past USARC Grand Prix champions include Olympians Keith Brantly ('95), Mark Coogan ('96), Rod DeHaven ('98/'00), Colleen De Reuck ('02), Libbie Hickman ('99-'00), Anne Marie Lauck ('96), Shelly Steely ('98) and Todd Williams ('99).

Seven Team USA Minnesota Distance Runners to Compete on Labor Day
Johanna Olson Joins Team

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - (Aug. 28, 2003) - Seven Team USA Minnesota athletes will compete in races on Labor Day, including the New Haven Savings Bank Road Race 20-kilometer in New Haven, Conn., and the Victory 10-kilometer in Minneapolis. The 26th annual New Haven race is the site of the USA 20K Championship for men and women. The Victory 10K is part of the Camden Community Labor Day Races presented by the Minnesota Distance Running Association.

In addition, Team USA Minnesota has selected Johanna Olson, 24, to join the post-collegiate distance training center. Olson is from Wadena, Minn., and is a graduate of Wadena-Deer Creek High School and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where she ran cross country and track. While at Luther she was a 7-time DIII All-American, a 2-time DIII Central Region Individual Champion in cross country, and the 2000 DIII National Champion in cross country. She was also a Honda Inspiration Award Winner.

Since college Olson has been training in Indiana and Idaho and returned to her native Minnesota in August. Last spring she was the 4th American at the Lilac Bloomsday 12K and placed 13th at the USATF Half-Marathon Championships in Duluth. She will make her marathon debut at the Twin Cities Marathon on Oct. 5.

New Haven 20K - Sept. 1
Katie McGregor, Sara Wells, Johanna Olson, Chris Lundstrom and Jason Lehmkuhle will be among the 4,600 competitors expected for the New Haven Road Race on Labor Day. The USA 20K National Championship features a prize purse of $30,000 for men and women including a first place award of $6,000.

McGregor was the 10,000 meter bronze medalist at both the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Outdoor Nationals, holds the Minnesota state record for the 10 mile of 55:49, and has a personal best in the half marathon of 1:12:51. Wells is the U.S. Women's Marathon Champion, placed 6th at the USA Women's Half Marathon Championship in June, and has a personal best of 1:12:50 in the half marathon distance. Olson has a personal best of 1:15:41 in the half marathon.

Lundstrom and Lehmkuhle both set their personal bests in the half marathon at the Garry Bjorklund Half in Duluth. Lundstrom finished 2nd in the half in 2002 in a time of 1:05:12 and Lehmkuhle finished 1st in the half in 2003 in 1:06:37. Lundstrom is preparing for the U.S. Men's Olympic Marathon Trials in February 2004 (he qualified in 2001 by placing 3rd in the National Marathon Championship at the New York City Marathon), and Lehmkuhle will make his marathon debut at Chicago in October.

Victory 10K - Sept. 1
Kristen Nicolini and Mike Wisniewski will compete in the Victory 10K on Labor Day, an annual event presented by the Minnesota Distance Running Association in north Minneapolis. Nicolini has recently moved up to the 10K distance on the roads and won the Hennepin-Lake Classic 10K in Minneapolis on Aug. 3 in a time of 34:41. On that same day she also won the Hennepin-Lake Classic 5K and on Aug. 23 won the RYKA Take Fitness to Heart 5K in Minneapolis as well.

Wisniewski has a 10,000m personal best on the track of 28:55 and is training for the Twin Cities Marathon on Oct. 5, which will be his second marathon. He will also run the City of Lakes 25K in Minneapolis on Sept. 7.
